Siberia by Ann Halam5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Beside the stove there were wooden sliding doors shutting off an alcove in the wall, that turned out to hold the bed Mama and Rosita shared. At one end there was a dark green enamel stove, with a chimney going up the wall. I know that Rosita saw a rather long, narrow room (I thought it was big, until I knew it was our whole house), with a concrete floor. I don't remember what I saw when my mother put me down, but I know how our hut must have looked when it was empty. When I realized that my shoes were too thin for the snow, I was frightened because my mama had made a mistake-and Mama never made mistakes! I didn't know what had happened to us, I didn't know what was going on at all. ![]() The strangest thing is remembering that I didn't know there was anything wrong. It's as if my life began that day, under the wide blank roaring sky, with the nice guard who smiled, the coldness my cherry red coat. I have been told things, and I've seen photographs, but I can't remember my father's face. I think about it often and I treasure all the details, because I can't remember anything from the time before. (I had to give up my name, I'll explain why when I get to that part.) That tractor ride is my oldest memory. ![]() Snowballs by ehlert5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Kids were totally blown away watching their parents unfold the paper to reveal a snowflake. Parents were instructed to experiment with folding and cutting and see what they come up with. Skills: scissor practice, engineering (where can I cut without my paper falling apart?), math (shapes), art, talking (LOTS of talking about what was happening, where to cut, how to cut, what shapes to cut, etc.-mostly between child and adult) Supplies: copy paper, scissors and an example snowflake We had a lot of fun talking about all the supplies used to make the snow people and animals in the book. It even snowed last night! Which hardly ever happens! ![]() So, we’re (read: I’M) letting it go and my co-worker will continue Explore! on Thursdays.Įventually, I will catch up on all my sessions (there are several I haven’t blogged yet) but this latest was SO much fun and perfect for this time of year. 2pm on Mondays does NOT work for our community. ![]() Yesterday was the last Explore! for the year and the last Monday session ever. ![]() Finnikin of the rock by melina marchetta5/30/2023 ![]() Urn:lcp:finnikinofrock0000marc_c9t1:epub:e3cf3ecb-069b-4b97-b9ff-e96a243534e3 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier finnikinofrock0000marc_c9t1 Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2p65rw84 Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780763643614 Lccn 2009028046 Ocr tesseract 4.1.1 Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Latin Ocr_detected_script_conf 0.9938 Ocr_module_version 0.0.11 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA14503 Openlibrary_edition ![]() Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 22:00:54 Boxid IA40063310 Camera Sony Alpha-A6300 (Control) Collection_set printdisabled External-identifier ![]() The Scarlet Flush by Carter Brown5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Right up there with The Scarlet Flush (1963) and So, What Killed The Vampire (1966) as my favorite Carter Brown books. As with any Carter Brown book, nothing is simple and the case of the missing starlet (sounds like a Perry Mason novel) quickly escalates into a globe totting sojourn which Holman barely survives.īullets, broads, deceit and death echo from the pages in one of the more deeper stories in the Holman cannon.įrom the stock standard P.I for hire opening to the great unveil, the formulaic mystery follows the tried and true narrative of dime-store pulps yet deviates from the stereotypical with an evolving plot that is sure to keep readers guessing. The private eye to the stars, Rick Holman, has his hands full with a missing starlet who has disappeared shortly after signing a major studio contract. The Scarlet Flush by Carter Brown, October 1, 1963, Signet edition, Paperback The Scarlet Flush (Octoedition) Open Library It looks like you're offline. ![]() First published in 1966, this Rick Holman mystery is a lot of fun to read and is one of the better books written by pulp author Carter Brown (pseudonym of the prolific Alan Yates). ![]() Fog, The by James Herbert5/30/2023 ![]() I also enjoyed the inbetween chapters that focus on random people and how the fog affects them. ![]() The way his character develops in the face of all these horrific things is well written. I enjoyed the way the characters reacted and how when Holman connected the dots he was treated as having not recovered from his brief spell of insanity. I found it took a little longer than I was expecting to get through, but other than that, it was alright. A yellow fog then begins to seep out of the fissure and turns all that it comes into contact with insane.Īfter getting exposed to the fog at the very beginning, Holman finds himself cured after a few tense days and from then on, is immune to the fog, making him the one person who can save the country.Īs stated above, this is not something I choose to read very often. The Fog follows John Holman who works for the Department of the Environment and is investigating rumours of Salisbury Plain being used by the Ministry of Defence for weapons testing, when an earthquake happens and a giant fissure appears in the middle of a country village. ![]() I thought that maybe reading something so different would push me to read more frequently (and it had the added bonus of fitting with the theme for October: Horror). The Fog by James Herbert has been sitting on my shelf since Christmas and is not something I would normally choose to read. Recently, I’ve picked up a few new hobbies and my reading has suffered because of it. ![]() ![]() ![]() She has employed a young woman named Tartelin to hunt for butterflies so she can continue her research on the species. ![]() Marianne is a stern old lady, she’s reclusive, wheelchair bound and carries a secret from her past that has left its mark on her. ![]() There is a deserted military base at one end of the island and Dogger Bank House, Marianne’s residence at the other. The story is set on a tiny island called Dohhalund which had belonged to Marianne Stoubridge’s family for hundreds of years. The writing is beautiful and has a slightly dark atmospheric feel to it, it was the perfect read for me! The author is a skilful story teller, but don’t let the gorgeous cover make you think this is a happy story about butterflies because it’s far from it. I absolutely loved The Women of Pearl Island by Polly Crosby! The story was mysterious and intriguing throughout and I couldn’t put it down. ![]() Poison's Kiss by Breeana Shields5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Usually I like a re-cap, but in this case it worked for me that there wasn’t. This book picks up pretty much where the last one left off and there is not much time spent on recapping the first. In this sequel, it unravels to a heart-pounding conclusion.ĪRC provided by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review. In Poison’s Kiss, Marinda pulled a dangerous thread.
